Goodwins Underground Speakeasy
Before Gruene was Gruene, it was the Goodwin community, settled by German farmers in the 1840’s. The community paved the way for original pioneers and merchants by setting the stage for economic progress in Eastern Comal County. In 1872, H.D. Gruene purchased 6,000 acres of land in this area, setting his empire of cotton in motion. Cotton was king, so was he. As a result, the town was renamed after its most prominent and prosperous citizen. At the turn of the century the Gruene family built the house you’re in today. Sit back, relax, grab yourself a giggle water…we promise we won’t serve you any bathtub gin!
